Keep Up Good Courage
A Yankee Family and the Civil War
The Correspondence of Cpl. Lewis Q. Smith, of Sandwich, New Hampshire, Fourteenth Regiment New Hampshire Volunteers,
By Alan Fraser Houston, MD

Drawn from Corporal Lewis Quimby Smith’s 1864 diary, and letters from the Sandwich Historical Society, this unique title details both family life in Sandwich, plus the 14th Regiment of NH Volunteers’ experiences in Washington, New Orleans, on the Mississippi, in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, and Savannah, GA. Rarely do both sides of a correspondence of this era survive the ravages of time and travel. This is a look at the struggles of the entire family, both on the battlefield and on the farm. Included are the battles of Third Winchester, Fisher’s Hill, and Cedar Creek in the fall Shenandoah Valley campaign. Dr. Houston’s painstaking research is completed with Civil War era images, and letters from other members of the 14th Regiment. 351 pages, 6X9, 67 Illustrations. $25.00 plus $5.00 for S&H.

A History of WHITEFIELD, NEW HAMPSHIRE 1774-1974
This book was written by Kim R. Nilsen and published by The Town of Whitefield in conjunction with the 1974 celebration of the bicentennial of the land grant (by Governor John Wentworth) of the tract now known as Whitefield.

According to the book, the parcel of land was "left over" after boundaries had been established for neighboring towns and was later referred to as "the land that no one wanted."  Aah.... if they could see it now!

Some of the historical detail that will accompany photos and old postcards on this site will be gleaned from this source but we are researching other resources and believe we'll be able to add many interesting facts and stories as we progress. $10.00
